Amuvi Progressive North-America (APNA) Inc. was formed on September 4, 2001 in Arlington, Texas by Amuvi sons and daughters in North America out of the need to improve the deplorable educational and socio-economic condition in their community. As a non-profit organization, its major objective was to identify and support the community activities that directly improve the quality of lives of Amuvi indigenes in particular and the overall Arochukwu community in general. Paramount to this objective was provision of suitable educational facilities and amenities, as well as the provision of clean potable water facilities as part of a health care initiative.
The 2001 meeting was highly successful by all measures. Some of the major milestones include:
• The formation of a non-profit organization to be known as Amuvi Foundation North America
• An 8-member caretaker committee was chartered to implement the resolutions reached at the inaugural meeting and administer the affairs of APNA.
Two development projects were identified as key focus areas:
1. Completion of Amuvi Community Secondary School
2. Development of clean drinking water supply as part of a health care initiative.
Since 2001, thanks to the generosity of so many kind-hearted individuals and organizations: cash, educational equipments and services have been made available towards completion and refurbishing of the school, which made it possible for the students to move to the new location since 2002.
Minimal progress has been made in actualizing the water borehole project. Various project estimates suggest the cost of an effective water borehole (deep enough to reach clean water aquifer, overhead tanks, and pumping solution) will far exceed the original $3500 estimate suggested during the 2001 conference. Alternative options are currently being evaluated to enable quick action on this commitment.
Houston 2004 convention provided us with tremendous opportunities to build on the success of the inaugural convention in Arlington , Texas in 2001 and we certainly took advantage of it. Again, thanks to the generosity of our people, we raised substantial amounts of money and materials to support our efforts at home.
LOS ANGELES 2006 re-energize and refocused our attention to the ideals set out in 2001 in Arlington, and 2004 in Houston. Out of this convention, APNA started the construction of a $150,000 administrative building in order to provide administrative offices and conference rooms for the school. As of March 2008, this building is at the roofing stage.
Fund Raising for completion of the ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING and CONFERENCE ROOMS at the school remains our most daunting task to date. The project is making progress but still has a long way to go. Amuvi Progressive North America continues to solicit for funds, computers, laboratory equipment, books and school supplies. Amuvi Progressive-North America will manage all aspects of the collection and delivery of your donations, excess inventory or used school items that are in serviceable condition, to Amuvi Community Secondary school. Project completion is managed through trusted local entities.
Washington DC 2008 presented us with yet another opportunity to be stronger and better focused to actualize the dreams and goals of the last conventions. DC was a huge success as it gave us the organization the chance to mobilize the local population.
New Jersey/New York 2010 was successful, but Raleigh North Carolina is here and now. Let us roll our sleeves and go to work so we can get to the finish line. The end is almost in site but there is still plenty to do. Let us inject some new energy into it and get it done. It is the right thing to do. This will undoubtedly require the collective effort of all Amuvi Sons and Daughters in North Americas, not some.
As always, the opportunity to come together and socialize with our brothers and sisters remains PRICELESS.
